Job Opportunity: Marketing & Communications Director - Springboard

Effective marketing and communications are programmatic activities vital in helping Springboard meet its mission, business objectives, programmatic metrics and grant/contract terms and conditions.

The Marketing & Communications Director will develop and implement external program marketing & communications strategies and tactics that are creative, proactive, integrated, effective and measurable. This position requires a mix of marketing and public relations skills. Duties include relating to print and broadcast media, web and internet interfaces, and developing advertisements, collateral marketing materials, videos, and reports.

This position reports to the SpringBoard Program Director. The incumbent works with SpringBoard team members to identify and exploit marketing and promotional opportunities, and to build external relationships - locally, nationally and internationally - with key target audiences, including the press, business and industry, government, funders and educators.

The incumbent ensures that Springboard's objectives and achievements (including those of partners and JEDC) are communicated effectively to the media to achieve accurate and positive and strategically valuable press coverage. He/she ensures the consistency and quality of the organization's messages and image.

The Communications Director's duties include:

  • PLANNING
    • Develop and maintain an external marketing and communications strategy and plan, in collaboration with SpringBoard team members and program director.
    • Define target audiences.
    • Develop messages and talking points and identify appropriate media and timing for communication topics.
    • Develop an annual plan for delivering messages to target audiences.
    • Promote SpringBoard Òsuccess storiesÓ.
    • Set annual goals and metrics
    • Look for sponsorship opportunities with which to associate SpringBoard and associate/leverage relevant media.
    • Coordinate efforts with outside marketing and PR firms when necessary.
  • EXECUTION / TACTICS
    • Media - Pitch stories ideas to writers and editors and write articles, letters and editorials for others to sign. Maintain media lists and develop press kits.
    • Media - Serve as a key point of contact for the media, but rely on other staff (and consultants and clients) for participation in interviews, development of press releases and other external communications.
    • Presentations - With staff support, develop video, DVDs and PowerPoint presentations.
    • Web - With JEDC/SpringBoard input, supervise web development and create and update documents and photos for web pages.
    • Collateral Materials - Be the lead person on developing collateral materials such as brochures, flyers, white papers, backgrounders and reports. Manage print and design of documents when produced outside the office.
    • Events: With the JEDC/SpringBoard team, execute plans for conferences, speaker engagements and special events.
    • Public Speaking - Look for opportunities for staff to make public presentations.
    • Research: Stay informed on developments that relate to JEDC/SpringBoard grants, clients and funders. Keep abreast of current, successful public relations strategies, approaches and technologies, including new media such as podcasts and blogs.
  • EVALUATION
    • Track performance against goals and metrics.
    • Monitor and evaluate the marketing and communications plan. Review program components on at least a basis with the SpringBoard Director and implement changes in plans and priorities as approved.
    • Track media placements. Keep a scrapbook of clippings.
    • Evaluate advertising and sponsorships on a quarterly basis.
    • Budget: As developed in collaboration with the SpringBoard Director, develop, monitor, and manage departmental budget to achieve strategic and financial objectives.
    • Other Duties, as Assigned
    • This position may assist in other related activities, as assigned by the SpringBoard Director or as may be requested by the JEDC Executive Director, including the development of JEDC press opportunities.

    Metrics for Assessing Performance

    Performance goals and metrics will be set on an annual basis with the SpringBoard Director, and may include, but not be limited to:

    • Development of a proactive public relations outline and plan.
    • Development and placement of news releases or articles in Alaska or technical media.
    • Placement of articles in nationally prominent media outlets.
    • Development and production of collateral marketing materials.
    • Development of press kits for the news media.
    • Successful execution of conferences.
    • Arrangement of public speaking events for SpringBoard staff.
    • Development of advertising and printing materials for events and programs.
    • Digital videotaping and editing of events and programs.
    • Updating/enhancing the SpringBoard website as needed.
    • Effective coordination and collaboration with SpringBoard team members.
