Juneau Profile: Location

Southeast Alaska - far enough north to enjoy the Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights, as you might know them) and southern enough to have earned the nickname "Alaska's Banana Belt." A quick look at a globe reveals Southeast Alaska's strategic proximity to Canada and our natural role as a link between the Pacific Northwest and the North. Air and water routes connect us to the Pacific Rim, Russia, Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Juneau can be found in the top half of the Panhandle at 58 degrees north.

Sister Cities

Ties of culture and kinship link Juneau to the Philippines, Canada, the United States, Russia and Central America, as well as the rest of Alaska. To foster these ties, Juneau has entered into formal "sister city" agreements with four communities in the North and Far East.

  • Camiling, Philippines:
Camiling is a town located in the Tarlac province of Luzon Island, the largest island in the Philippines. Like Juneau, Tarlac is an ethnically mixed area; unlike Juneau, however, the coldest month dips down to 79 degrees Fahrenheit! You can find information about all of the provinces of the Philippines at this English-language link.
  • Chiayi Township, Taiwan:
Chiayi, Taiwan is the municipal center for the Chiayi province on Taiwan. Close to the base of Taiwan's central mountains, Chiayi is the starting off point for many scenic excursions, as well as being a center for transportation, manufacturing and education.
  • Vladivostok, Russia:
The Russian Far East opened its doors to us when Vladivostok became a sister city to Juneau. With major port facilities and capacity, as well as service of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, it is well-positioned for the 21st century. Vladivostok is a center for industry, education and culture; learn more at this English-language site.
  • Whitehorse, Yukon Territories, Canada:
The City of Whitehorse, population 23,000, is the capital of Canada's Yukon Territory. In addition to our connection as former gold towns, Whitehorse and Juneau have much in common: both are centers of government and regional hubs for services and supplies.
