Getting Around in Southeast . . .
You might know that Juneau has no roads coming into town. But did you
realize that we are on a federally-recognized highway system?
The Alaska
Marine Highway System (AMHS) is to Juneau what Interstates are to other cities. Seven
State ferries will arrive in Juneau several times each week in 2001. The States
Blue
Canoes are a vital link between and among the communities
in Southeast Alaska and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and Bellingham, Washington.
Air transportation is also important throughout Alaska. In 1996, one
of every 58 Alaskans was a registered pilot a rate six times higher than the rest
of the country. Thanks to the commitment of Juneaus major air carrier, Alaska Airlines, the Juneau International Airport
- serving a local population of less than 35,000 - is equipped with more precise aids to
air navigation than most cities with populations in excess of 200,000. The GPS (or Global Positioning System) computers installed on most of Alaska Airlines jets
ensures safe and reliable air service to Alaskas capital city.

when you know who to call for help. Here is contact information for the four major freight
