The Tlingit name, Yees Ku. Oo means “New People/New Beginning.” (Shu Gyad is the Sm’algyax translation) The late Clarence Jackson translated the name for the group at AFN in 2003, the year the dance group formed.

The group has performed in many venues, including the Governor’s Inaugural Balls; the Juneau Maritime Festival; Washington, DC for Alaska Day; Gold Medal, the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, as well as many local events.

Fire on McGinnis

FIre on McGinnis takes traditional Irish and Scottish songs and plays them to a floor bouncing rock beat Fire on McGInnis is influenced by modern Cetic rock bands like The Dropkick Murphys, FLogging Molly, the Pogues. For a lively twist, Fire on McGinnis sprinkles in their taste of Led Zeppelin, The Cranberries, Chumbawumba, The Proclaimers, and of course, their original Cetic inspired songs. While the band likes to keep things hot with smoking fiddle and bagpipe tunes, the goal is to have a great time and get the audience on their feet!.

Matt Naylor

“Matt Naylor is more of a “campfire guitarist” than a professional musician. He loves to play and sing folk and acoustic music and share it with others. His main performance experience was as a guitarist for the Coast Guard Academy Glee Club for several years, where he traveled all over the country performing sea shanties and patriotic music with the group. He is currently an active duty Coast Guard service member and has been stationed in Juneau with his wife, Sharise, since 2019. Prior to Juneau, they lived across the continent in Maine while Matt was on sea duty. Their daughters, Aurora and Luna, were both born in Juneau and love to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Alaska together.”
