STEM Summer Program

FlightQuest - From Wings to Rockets
Summer Day Camp for students going into 8th or 9th grades
June 28 - July 2, 2010 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Thunder Mountain High School

Have you ever wanted to soar on the winds, scanning the mountainsides for prey with the wings of a hawk? Find out who Icarus was, and how he achieved this dream. Have you wondered how such small, flimsy wings can support the thousands of pounds of a jet plane as it takes flight? Explore how a wing creates lift. Can you imagine building a paper airplane that will stay in flight for nearly 30 seconds? Come and find out how water can be used as a rocket propellant. Then build and launch your own rocket powered by a gunpowder engine. See how high it will fly.

During this one week summer day camp, students will learn about the history of flight, explore how wings work, fold paper airplanes with the Guiness Book of Records champion paper air plane modeler Ken Blackburn, design and fly water rockets, and build solid booster rockets for a final launch array of sparks and smoke. Students will be guided through hands-on, minds-on inquiry activities and work together as a team to find the answers to science, engineering and technology puzzles with the help of experienced instructors and industry professionals. And, a special Thursday night program and sleepover will be especially "illuminating." Don't miss this extravaganza of fun and flight.

The overall cost for the five-day camp is $150 per student. Payment is due by the first day of camp. Checks, VISA, and MasterCard are accepted. Please make checks payable to the Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC). Registrations received after the camp is full will be returned with a FULL refund. Credit card payments will not be processed unless a student is enrolled.

REFUND POLICY - Refunds will not be given to students that are enrolled but do not complete the camp. Exceptions will be made only on the basis of unforeseen medical or family emergencies.
