Teams of up to 15 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p><em>Students get to:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Design, build, and program robots<\/li>\n<li>Apply real-world math and science concepts<\/li>\n<li>Develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills<\/li>\n<li>Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments<\/li>\n<li>Earn a place in the World Championship<\/li>\n<li>Qualify for more than $80 million in college scholarships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most teams in Alaska meet as part of a high school class or an afterschool club anywhere from 2 times per week to every day. The season starts with kick offs hosted by teams around the state on the day of the global challenge release. Teams learn about the game for the current season, then have a few months to get ready for competition. Some communities will host many scrimmages and mini-meets throughout the season, while some teams will just work towards a regional competition. Official Qualifier Tournaments in Alaska are usually held in December through February, leading into a State Championship in February\/March. Teams selected during the State Championship may\u00a0qualify for the <span><em>FIRST <\/em><\/span>World Championship typically held in April.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to building and programming their robot, each team is expected to do a lot of community outreach. This includes reaching out to younger students (coaching <span><em>FIRST <\/em>LEGO\u00a0<\/span>League Teams, hosting tournaments &amp; workshops), engaging with engineers in and beyond their community, and getting involved in other community events (school assemblies, community events, state fair, etc).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_divider_1 et_pb_divider et_pb_space et_pb_divider_position_top et_pb_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_divider_internal\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_row_2 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_2 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">WHO<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><em>FIRST <\/em>Tech Challenge <\/span>Teams are 2-15 kids ranging from advanced middle school students to high school age.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Teams form in schools, clubs, and neighborhood groups. No requirements on affiliation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Teams need at least 2 adult coaches\/mentors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_column_3 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">WHEN<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most teams form up in late spring or early September.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Registration opens in late spring and remains open through the fall.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The challenge is released and kick off events are usually held in early September.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Official Regional Qualifier Competitions happen all over the state from December through February. Schools are encouraged to host regular scrimmages throughout the season to help prepare for the qualifiers, but we realize that this is not possible for most areas in the state.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Teams will advance from the official qualifiers to the state championship usually held in late February or early March, hosted in various locations in the state.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Top teams from the State Championship may qualify for the <span><em>FIRST<\/em><sup><em style=\"font-size: 12px;\">\u00ae<\/em><\/sup> <\/span>World Championship, typically held in April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_row_3 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_4 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_6 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">WHERE<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_7 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are teams in most areas of the state including remote villages.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many teams meet in school classrooms as an after school club.
