Great Capital City Tour: Gavel Alaska, Capital Complex and Downtown Juneau
Join guide Wayne Jensen from the Alaska Committee on a tour highlighting what makes Juneau a great Capital City. This tour will highlight Gavel Alaska’s innovative coverage of the legislative session including insights from KTOO President and General Manager Bill Legere. You’ll learn about improvements related to downtown Juneau infrastructure including housing, childcare, landscaping, and other considerations for legislators.

Join us for a tour of new businesses in Juneau, what it took them to start up, and their business plan going forward. See the Juneau compost site in person and learn about the magnitude of what happens there and how it could scale out. View a working brewery and Juneau’s newest restaurant and hear about their business models and how they work together out of the same space. Alaska’s Changing Environment: New Opportunities and Challenges

Keynote Presentation: John Walsh, Chief Scientist, International Arctic Research Center

Alaska is coming off its warmest year on record, a year when parts of Alaska were under extreme drought conditions. The multi-year changes in climate will continue, and virtually all sectors of the Alaskan economy will have to adapt. Some sectors with climate-related opportunities and challenges are tourism, marine transport, commercial fishing, renewable energy and resource extraction. Learn about our understanding of the drivers of the recent changes and the potential tipping points for our key industries. This keynote is prepared by John Walsh with Sarah Trainor, Co-Director, Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Our achievement-based culture has taught us to honor the accomplishments of individuals, but excellence and innovation are almost always the result of the collaborative efforts and insights of a variety of individuals.  As part of his work at Project Zero, a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Edward Clapp is reframing creativity as an experience that individuals can participate in, rather than something one either is or has.

Alaska Innovators Hall of Fame 2020 Induction Ceremony

Presented by: Larry Hinzman, Vice Chancellor for Research, University of Alaska, Fairbanks & Lt. Govenor Kevin Meyer, State of Alaska Legislature

Since 2014, the Alaska State Committee on Research (SCoR) has honored outstanding innovations and individuals that contribute to Alaska’s growing culture of innovation. Three Alaskans, whose innovations have put Alaska on the map as a leader in innovation, will be honored with induction into the Alaska Innovators Hall of Fame. A traditional native Alaskan invention will also be honored.

Sleetmute Wildcats, Alaska Global Innovation Award Winners 

The FIRST ® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award showcases the real-world solutions to an annually themed Challenge created by FIRST LEGO League teams from around the world.  Each year Alaska nominates one team to apply to be among 20 semi-finalists who are recognized for their inventions and receive assistance to further develop solutions, including $20,000 to the winning team. This year’s nominee, the Sleetmute Wildcat Robot Creators, are traveling to Juneau to present their proposal for a school security system that can detect blood alcohol level.
