Regional Innovation Acceleration Network (RIAN)

Mark presented From Cluster Development to System Change, in which he explored how industry clusters work together to strengthen the region through more conventional methods of community, workforce, and economic development, emphasizing: the increased role technology and scientific advances can, and should, have on our modern economy; how organizations like RIAN can help integrate science and technology into business ventures; and how important it is both private and public sectors invest in innovation.

Scott Stern

MIT Sloan School of Management

Scott is the David Sarnoff professor of management and chair of the Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management Group at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He presented Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Alaskan Competitiveness, primarily discussing the importance of maintaining open communication and collaboration between entrepreneurs, innovators (researchers) and policymakers. Stern also talked about regional specialization as a result of clusters, using Silicon Valley as a model to illustrate every region must capitalize on its regional advantages.

Armelle Solelhac

Cluster Montagne, French Mountain Cluster member

 

Armelle discussed the French Mountain Cluster Experience and how it has had a positive impact on the French region of the Alps with regards to marketing and tourism. The cluster was so successful they are now faced with whether to expand their cluster to include other countries. Her expertise in marketing and digital communication led Armelle to start SWiTCH, a company that focuses on marketing with an emphasis on using modern methods of communication and media. In the mini-session with Armelle, she focused on benefits and advantages of using social media platforms for Alaskan businesses and clusters.
